Why use water to understand electricity?

Water is visible, so it gives us a familiar picture for ideas that are otherwise difficult to see. A pipe provides a path, flowing water has a measurable rate, and a pressure or height difference gives the water a reason to move.

An electrical circuit has related ideas. A wire provides a path for current, voltage is the difference that drives the circuit, a switch opens or completes the path, and resistance makes current harder to move. The comparison is not exact, but it is a useful first step.

The five ideas to remember

Think of a pipe as a wire, water flow rate as current, pressure difference as voltage, a valve as a switch, and a restriction as resistance. These five relationships give you a simple foundation for understanding what each part does in a basic circuit.
